Overview

Is business line of credit the right fit?

A line of credit sits ready in the background. You draw what you need for payroll, inventory or an unexpected repair, pay interest only on what you use, and the limit refills as you repay.

  • Smoothing seasonal or uneven cash flow
  • Covering payroll gaps between receivables
  • Keeping a safety net open without a fixed loan

Pros

  • Pay interest only on what you actually use
  • Reusable — the limit refills as you repay
  • Good as a standing safety net

Cons

  • Limits are often lower than a lump-sum loan
  • Some lines charge draw or maintenance fees
  • Lenders can review and adjust the limit

Business Line of Credit FAQ

How is a line of credit different from a loan?

A loan gives you a lump sum once and you repay it on a schedule. A line of credit gives you a limit you can draw from repeatedly; you only pay interest on what you have drawn, and repaying frees the limit up again.

Does a business line of credit require collateral?

Many lines from online lenders are unsecured and rely on your revenue and credit profile, usually with a personal guarantee. Larger lines from banks may require collateral such as receivables or equipment.

How much of a line can I get?

Limits are typically sized from your average monthly deposits and time in business. As a rough guide, many providers start around one month of revenue; the actual limit is set by each lender after review.
